A gang-rape case in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, involving a 19-year-old woman has grown increasingly complex, prompting the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to scrutinize the allegations. The young woman claimed she was assaulted by 23 men over a week, from March 29 to April 4, according to a First Information Report (FIR) filed by her mother on April 6 at the Lalpur-Pandeypur police station.
She alleged that the accused drugged her, rendering her incoherent, and moved her across various locations in the city, where she was repeatedly raped. The police initially acted on her complaint, arresting 14 of the 23 accused, with 12 identified by name and 11 listed as unidentified.
However, the case took a turn when the families of the accused presented evidence they claim undermines the woman’s account, leading authorities to pause further arrests pending a deeper investigation.
The families of the accused submitted videos, photographs, and Instagram conversations to the police, asserting that the woman was not under duress during the alleged period of assault. This digital evidence reportedly shows her moving freely in public, smiling, riding motorcycles, and actively posting on social media, including an Instagram image uploaded on April 2.
The families argue that her behavior, as seen in these posts, appears inconsistent with claims of being drugged or restrained. Additionally, a medical examination revealed no visible signs of injury or trauma, further complicating the case.
According to a report published by India Today, Varanasi Police Commissioner announced the creation of an eight-member SIT, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, to thoroughly examine both the survivor’s allegations and the counterclaims. The team, which includes female officers, is tasked with delivering a comprehensive report within 30 days to ensure a fair investigation.
The case has drawn significant attention, including from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who, during his 50th visit to Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, was briefed on the matter. He directed officials to take swift and stringent action against those found guilty, emphasizing the need to prevent such incidents.
